The intellectual property landscape for urolithin A

A complex international landscape
Using urolithin A as an ingredient means navigating a complex international IP environment: core efficacy, compositions and dosage forms are patented in the major markets, and enforcement is active. In October 2025 the originator sued 30 online sellers in U.S. federal court; in July 2026 it obtained permanent injunctions against 19 of them and a combined USD 5.3 million in damages, with the largest single award above USD 2.7 million and treble damages applied in some cases.
Directions already under patent protection
Based on continuous patent searching and analysis, the following directions are covered by third-party patents and may not be used in your product claims or formulations without authorisation: the mitophagy mechanism and its efficacy claims (muscle function · anti-ageing), skin compositions combining urolithin A with NAD precursors, sensitive-skin and anti-hair-loss applications, SIRT6 activation, and several routes that promote in-vivo production through precursors or probiotics. Continuously updated patent analysis is provided in the biweekly brief.
Process freedom-to-operate assessment complete
