About mulberry leaf extract

Its mechanism is what makes the application range so wide

1-DNJ closely resembles glucose in structure. In the small intestine it inhibits α-glucosidase, slowing the hydrolysis of disaccharides and lowering the glycaemic index of the food. Any carbohydrate-containing carrier can therefore take it — the main reason it appears in coffee, dairy drinks, plant milk, milk powder and pressed tablets alike.

What standard of mulberry leaf extract can go into a beverage

Most mulberry leaf extracts are hazy in liquid systems and carry a distinct grassy note. Dissolution speed, clarity and flavour are therefore the three indicators that decide whether an extract can be used in a drink.

The advantages of water extraction

Chinese herbal extraction has a long tradition and history of use with water as the solvent; a water-based process for mulberry leaf extract falls within the scope of recognised traditional processing in China. For export customers this means a simpler solvent-residue file and a clearer process narrative.

Where to buy and when to harvest, decided by multi-region field data

6 growing regions · 72 lots · 1-DNJ assayed by HPLC across region, harvest month and leaf position
Variable controlled
1-DNJ content varies markedly with growing region, harvest month and leaf position: the same region differs by month, and the same plant differs by leaf position
How
Multi-year sampling of the main growing regions with HPLC assay and statistical analysis, building a region × harvest-window × 1-DNJ database used to lock in the regions and harvest windows capable of stable volume supply
Proof
Raw-material field survey report: content ranges and statistical analysis across six regions and 72 lots over two years; HPLC records for the raw material

Blood-glucose rise ↓
Mulberry leaf extract · human · 75 g sucrose load

In type 2 diabetic and control subjects the rise in blood glucose after 75 g sucrose was smaller, while breath hydrogen rose — meaning part of the sucrose was not broken down and absorbed in the small intestine but passed to the colon for bacterial fermentation, independent evidence that sugar digestion was slowed

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose between the 1% and 5% grades?
By carrier. Liquid beverages, powdered drinks and other liquid or reconstituted systems usually take the 1% grade (recommended 750–1,500 mg/day); tablets, capsules and other dosage forms with limited unit size take the 5% grade (recommended 150–360 mg/day). Lower-strength versions can also be supplied to optimise cost where the formulation allows.
Will it make a beverage hazy or taste grassy?
This is exactly where our process focuses. Fine filtration plus ultrafiltration and nanofiltration give an instant, clear solution; for dairy and tea systems an improved-taste version is available (HerbFlav™ flavour technology). A 1% aqueous solution is stable across pH 3–12 and passes the alcohol test. We recommend requesting samples and testing them in your actual system.
How is 1-DNJ quantified?
1-DNJ is the marker, determined by HPLC, with a COA. We recommend comparing and dosing on marker content rather than extraction ratio.
Why the emphasis on water extraction?
Food-grade purified water is the extraction solvent and no organic solvent is used, so there is no solvent-residue test item. Chinese herbal extraction has a long tradition and history of use with water, and this route falls within the scope of recognised traditional processing in China; for export customers it means a simpler solvent-residue file and a clearer process narrative.
What is the regulatory status in overseas markets?
Market-access pathways and permitted claims differ by market and must be assessed one by one. Our regulatory team can provide an assessment for a specific market and use; please state your target market and application format when you contact us.
Can you supply custom grades or combinations?
Yes. Custom versions already exist for dairy applications (an improved-taste version and a light-colour version), and we can provide combination proposals and full-service support from ingredient to finished product based on your formulation needs.
How do I obtain the specification, COA and samples?
Describe your application and target market in the form above; your account manager will arrange quality documents and samples. Unpublished data is provided under NDA.
