Tech-Inno Health publishes a NutraIngredients feature: beyond mitophagy, a ribosome-based mechanism for urolithin A

Schematic: urolithin A from mitophagy (subtraction) to ribosome and protein renewal (addition)

On 26 October 2026, NutraIngredients published Tech-Inno Health's partner feature "Beyond mitophagy: A new ribosome-based mechanism emerges for urolithin A".

What the article says

For a decade, urolithin A research has centred on mitophagy: clearing damaged mitochondrial components. The article argues that keeping mitochondria running also needs "addition": continuous, ribosome-driven synthesis of the proteins mitochondria depend on. Most mitochondrial proteins are made on cytosolic ribosomes and then imported; a 2022 Nature study showed that ageing worsens ribosome pausing and weakens the clearance of abnormal newly made proteins.

MitoIgnite® cell-model data

MitoIgnite® restoring HPG-labelled nascent protein synthesis in AC16, AML12 and C2C12 cell models: fluorescence images and quantification

Figure 1. MitoIgnite® restores nascent protein synthesis in stressed cardiac, liver and skeletal-muscle cells: HPG-labelled newly synthesised protein (green), nuclei counterstained (blue), in AC16 cardiomyocytes (A, B), AML12 hepatocytes (C, D) and C2C12 skeletal-muscle cells (E, F). Cell-model data.

Tech-Inno Health ran a systematic programme on its urolithin A ingredient MitoIgnite® in senescent and stressed cell models, following the full arc from ribosome biogenesis to protein output. In the most direct readout, HPG labelling of newly made protein, three stressors reduced synthesis in cardiac, liver and skeletal-muscle cells to roughly 20–35% of control; 5 µM MitoIgnite® restored it two- to three-fold, with statistical significance in every model and no change to baseline synthesis in unstressed cells. The article states that these are early, cell-model findings; patent applications have been filed and the work will extend to the mitochondrial ribosome.

What it means for formulators and brands

This adds a second, cell-model-documented mechanism to MitoIgnite® beyond mitophagy, "subtract and add", for positioning in healthy ageing, muscle and energy, and skin. Tech-Inno Health supports partners with the mechanism data package, specifications and COAs, samples, and joint studies.
